How has your week been? I've started back in my day-job at the Hotel officially this week and it's been a change to get out the house without a child clinging on to me.
It's been a few weeks since we last caught up with Nia & Buster, their wedding is getting ever so close now - it's next month. Today is their engagement post. If you would like to share you're wedding planning diary on the blog and would like more information on doing so, please get in touch.
The 25th of January is the Welsh day of love, Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen. Every year since we’ve been together we have walked out to Dwynwen’s church on Llanddwyn Island on Anglesey. We usually go armed with rain coat, welly boots and a flask of tea and spend the day enjoying the sea air and nattering about everything and nothing.
Last year was no different, or so I thought. We drove to my parent’s house on Anglesey on the Friday and were pleased to see that my sister and her boyfriend had also come home for the weekend. My two brothers were there too so we had a chilled, family evening on the Friday – completely oblivious to Buster’s plans. The following morning, we planned to go for our annual walk to the beach. In hindsight, Buster was agitated to get going and was suspiciously eager to have us out of the house before lunch time. We set off to the beach and I knew something was up, I had been nagging him for a cat for months and so thought that he had perhaps arranged to pick up a kitten or something. Turns out, it was better than that.
We walked out to the island and past Dwynwen’s church to the lighthouse beyond. It was cold and I needed a wee, my glasses had steamed up and were covered with water droplets so it probably wasn’t the romantic moment that Buster had been hoping for! Nevertheless I soon forgot about all that when I turned to see him holding a little wooden box with a familiar engraving on it. Buster isn’t a fluent Welsh speaker but he’d practised what he wanted to say and it was perfect – I just burst into tears! The ring he had chosen for me was Welsh rose gold with a stunning princess cut diamond set into it and the word ‘cariad’ (‘love’) engraved inside. I’m not a girly girl and think I would have struggled to choose an engagement ring myself so I was stunned that Buster managed to get it SO right. He’d even managed to keep it a secret for 10months, having it stashed away in his parents’ house until the perfect moment.
With a rummage in his rucksack he produced a bottle of champagne and two glasses and in typical Buster fashion – a go pro camera to capture the moment. As much as I wished that I wasn’t wearing my mum’s old fleece, wellington boots and Buster’s woolly hat – it really couldn’t have been better. After sobbing down the phone to my future mum-in-law and my own mother the phone was then passed to my sister, which is when the day got even better!
Squealing to each other down the phone we realised that we had missed each other by a mere few hours! Earlier that morning Dom proposed to my sister, Marged in front of Dwynwen’s church on the same island – a mere 100 meters away from our spot. The double engagement was completely un-planned, a magical coincidence that just made the day extra special. We celebrated both engagements with an impromptu visit to Dylan’s in Menai Bridge for a fantastic meal and plenty of bubbles.
